Selecting an engagement ring is one of the most significant and exciting steps in a romantic relationship. It's a symbol of commitment, an investment in the future, and a reflection of personal style and tastes. But as with most significant purchases, understanding the costs associated with engagement rings is critical.

Fortunately, Edwin Novel’s leading jewelry experts know all of the intricate factors that go into engagement ring costs. Read on to find out everything you need to know about these factors, as well as to determine what you should spend on an engagement ring.

The Importance of Engagement Rings in Relationships

Engagement rings are steeped in tradition and symbolism. Similar to wedding rings, they're a tangible representation of a couple's commitment to one another and the beginning of a new chapter. The emotional value they carry is immeasurable and the effort put into choosing the perfect ring is often significant. This purchase is not merely about buying a piece of jewelry; it’s about the anticipation, the excitement, and the lasting memories created during this moment in a couple’s life.

In today's culture, how much you spend on an engagement or a wedding ring can hold some weight of your love for someone. And so, understanding the depth of this significance is the first step in approaching the financial component of this purchase.

Factors Influencing Cost

When you are going engagement ring shopping, it's important to note factors involved in ring prices. When it comes to engagement ring prices, a multitude of factors come into play.

Quality of the Center Stone - The center stone is the heart of the engagement ring. Traditionally, the "four Cs" of a diamond engagement ring — carat weight, cut, color, and clarity — significantly impact the price. Larger, more brilliant, and clear diamonds command a higher price tag. However, this doesn’t mean you have to compromise: smaller diamonds can still sparkle brilliantly due to the quality of their cut.

Metal Choice - The metal of the band can influence the cost. Platinum is a popular choice for its durability and rarity, making it one of the most expensive ring options. On the other hand, white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold offer different aesthetics and costs, with white gold sitting in the middle, price-wise.

Brand and Designer Influence - Just like with any luxury item, the brand or designer associated with the ring can add a premium to the cost. Some might prefer a well-known brand for its prestige and quality promise, while others may find exceptional value in the work of local or independent designers.

Customization Options - Personalization can be a beautiful addition to an engagement ring, but it also comes with a cost. From engraved messages to unique settings and complex designs, each customization adds to the final price. It's important to consider whether these additions align with your partner's taste and the longevity of the design within their personal style.

Average Engagement Ring Cost

The price of an engagement ring can vary greatly depending on the choices made during purchase.

Entry-Level Options

For those looking to propose without a significant financial burden, there are several options. Simulated or lab-grown diamonds are lower in cost than natural stones and offer a similar look and quality. These diamond alternatives can be indistinguishable to the untrained eye and may appeal to couples looking for budget-friendly yet beautiful options.

Mid-Range Choices

Middle-tier rings often feature smaller natural diamonds or gemstones, set in gold or a gold alloy. They offer a touch of luxury without an exorbitant price and can still be quite significant in their beauty and craftsmanship. A middle-tier ring can be an excellent compromise between cost and quality.

High-End Luxury Rings

Luxury rings often feature large, high-quality natural diamonds, set in platinum or high-carat gold. They may also come with intricate designs, designer brands, and high levels of craftsmanship. For those who want to make a grand statement with their engagement ring, a luxury option showcases opulence and prestige.

Additional Costs to Consider

In addition to the base price, there are several other costs that may come into play when purchasing an engagement ring.

Ring Settings

The way a stone is set can affect its cost. Prong and pave settings, for example, require more work and skill, thus commanding a higher price. Bezel and channel settings, on the other hand, are more secure and less expensive.

Engraving

The cost of engraving a personal message inside the band varies. Hand-etched engravings are more expensive than machine engravings, and the length of the message can also influence the price.

Insurance

Given the emotional and financial worth of an engagement ring, insuring it against loss, theft, or damage is a prudent decision. The annual premium can range from 1% to 3% of the ring's value, depending on where you live and the policies available.

Maintenance

Engagement rings require regular maintenance to keep them looking their best. Regular cleaning, professional polishing, and occasional repairs can all add to the cost of owning and maintaining the ring.

How the 4Cs Impact Price

Before we dissect the cost disparity between custom and pre-designed rings, it's important to understand the foundational principles that influence price in either category. The 4Cs—cut, color, clarity, and carat weight—are universally acknowledged metrics that affect the cost of a diamond, but the setting itself also plays a pivotal role.

Cut - The cut of a diamond is arguably the most significant factor affecting its beauty. A well-cut diamond reflects light and displays a brilliant sparkle, whereas a poorly cut diamond can appear dull, even if it has high clarity and color grades. Hence, the cut significantly influences the price.

Color - Diamonds come in a range of colors, with the colorless ones being the most rare and expensive. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamond color on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown).

Clarity - Clarity measures the presence of internal 'inclusions' and external 'blemishes' on a diamond. The fewer the imperfections, the more valuable the diamond, though many inclusions are microscopic and don't affect the beauty or structural integrity of the stone.

Carat Weight - Carat weight is the term used to measure a diamond's apparent size. This is not to be confused with a diamond's physical weight. While carat weight does impact the cost, the impact might not be as straightforward as one might think.

Cost Differences Between Ready-Made Rings and Custom-Designed Rings

To explore the cost comparisons, let’s take a look at the process of purchasing a ready-made ring versus that of a custom design.

Ready-Made Rings - Ready-made rings are often more cost-efficient due to their mass production. These rings are readily available and can be purchased on the spot. Customers generally find a wider range of options in terms of styles and prices. Ready-made rings may vary in price significantly, depending on where you shop and the brand's reputation.

Custom-Designed Rings - Custom engagement rings, on the other hand, are unique creations that cater to the specific desires of the customer. This individualization often entails higher costs, given the bespoke nature of the product. There's the value of one-on-one design time, creating a unique mold and diamond shape for the ring, as well as the potential trial and error of the initial design. However, the final piece is a one-of-a-kind creation, tailored with love in mind.

Factors to Weigh

Deciding between a custom and ready-made ring involves considering several factors. Timeline is crucial; custom rings can take several weeks or even months to design and produce, whereas a ready-made ring can be bought and presented in a much shorter timeframe.

Uniqueness and Sentiment

Custom rings hold the advantage when it comes to personalization and sentiment. The ability to craft a ring that tells a story unique to the couple is invaluable. For some, the idea of having a common, mass-produced ring doesn't carry the same emotional weight.

Budget Constraints

It's no secret that custom rings are usually more expensive. However, setting an engagement ring budget from the outset can guide preferences and costs, whether it's for a ready-made ring that fits within a specific price range or for a custom piece that factors in the same limit.

Unpacking the Costs of Customization

The allure of a custom engagement ring lies in its exclusivity—the promise of a design unlike any other. However, this privilege doesn't come without a price.

Diamond Selection

Custom rings allow for more say in the selection of the diamond. Customers can opt for the exact diamond they desire in terms of the 4Cs, balancing their priorities and budget. This level of specificity can mean a diamond that's higher in one category (like cut or clarity) may be lower in another, and the price will reflect these adjustments.

Metal Choice

The metal used in the ring's setting and band also influences the cost. Precious metals like platinum are denser and rarer, hence more expensive. White gold, while still a great option, can offer the look of platinum at a lower cost. The choice between 14k and 18k also matters, with 18k being a pricier option due to its higher gold content.

Labor and Craftsmanship

The actual labor for creating a custom ring involves skilled craftsmen working to bring a design to life. This craftsmanship is often reflected in the final price, but it ensures that the final piece is a true work of art.

Design Complications

Complex designs cost more due to the intricacy of the work required. Rings with elaborate settings, multiple stones, or intricate patterns may require more labor and, thus, come at a premium.

Ongoing Support and Services

A reputable jeweler providing custom rings will often offer additional services and warranties that can also contribute to the overall cost, such as lifetime guarantees, resizing, and cleaning packages.

Tips for Budgeting and Saving

Preparation and planning are key when it comes to buying an engagement ring. Here are some tips to help you in the budgeting process.

Setting a Budget

Setting a budget is the most crucial step. It should be an amount that you can afford without significant strain on your finances, keeping in mind your long-term financial goals and other upcoming expenses like a wedding or a house.

Timing Your Purchase

There are certain periods, such as during sales or after the holidays, when jewelers offer discounts. Additionally, buying during off-peak times may help you get a better deal.

Considering Alternatives

If the traditional diamond engagement ring isn't a must, there are alternatives. Gemstones like sapphires, rubies, or emeralds offer unique and often more affordable options that still carry significant meaning.

Remember, the value of the engagement ring is derived by the love and commitment it symbolizes. While a high price tag can be enticing, it's not a guarantee of a successful marriage or lasting happiness. In the end, what matters most is the thought and care you put into choosing a ring that your partner will cherish, within your means and their desires.

Luxurious sparkle, timeless elegance, and the allure of precious gemstones have captivated humans for centuries. In the world of gemstone jewelry, the word "carat" is as crucial as the luster of a diamond or the vivid hue of an emerald. From measuring the purity of gold to the intricacies of a diamond carat, the measurement is used by jewelers all over the world.

But what is a carat, and why is it so pivotal when choosing the jewelry that will adorn us, or the loved ones we hold dear?

Luckily, our experts at Edwin Novel can tell you everything you need to know about carats. Whether you want to know how many carats are in your diamond earrings or simply how the jewelry industry uses the measurement, we have you covered:

Defining Carat and Its Role in Jewelry

Carat is the universal unit of measurement to identify the weight or mass of a gemstone or pearl. While you’ve likely heard the term before, you’re not alone if you don’t know the details.

Simply put, carat refers to the weight of the stone, with each carat representing 200 milligrams. This weight directly corresponds to the stone's size, a quality considered paramount in the attractiveness and value assessment of gemstone jewelry. Understanding carats can help you make an informed decision when investing in a piece that could become an heirloom.

The Origin and History of the Carat

The term "carat" has a profound historical underpinning. It dates back to ancient times, believed to have originated from the Greek word "kerátion," which referred to the carob seeds used by traders as counterweights on their balance scales. The practice of using small weights to measure gold purity (whether it's pure gold or not) and gemstones led to the carat being standardized to 0.2 grams and became the yardstick for valuing precious stones.

Deciphering Carats for Consumers

For the eager consumer, knowledge of carats can influence not only the aesthetic considerations of their jewelry but also its value and durability. Different gemstones have different densities and therefore, two stones of the same carat might differ in size.

We'll explore how carat weight interacts with the cut, color, and clarity of a gem – the well-known "Four Cs" that dictate a stone's beauty. This insight is empowering, equipping shoppers with the wisdom to discern the subtleties of varying carat weights.

Understanding Carat Weight in Gemstones: A Comprehensive Guide

Unveiling the Carat Weight: Size and Value

The carat weight of a gemstone is a crucial element that influences its size and price, making it a crucial consideration within the jewelry industry. But what exactly is a carat when it comes to gemstones?

As mentioned previously, one carat is a unit of mass specifically used to measure diamond weight and other gemstones. A single carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams, a weight that may seem minuscule, but can manifest in grand visual appearances and substantial price tags. This means that carat weight directly influences gemstone weight.

The Significance of the Carat in Size

The relationship between carat weight and size is straightforward—a higher-carat diamond is usually larger in appearance. However, this correlation between weight and visual size is not a perfect one-to-one, as the cut and shape of the gemstones can also play a pivotal role. For instance, a well-cut diamond might appear larger than its carat weight would suggest due to the way it reflects light. Likewise, the shape of the gemstone can spread the apparent size over a wider area or concentrate it in a smaller space.

Measuring Carat Weight

Carat weight is measured with precision, using scales that can calculate down to the milligram. The process is meticulous, as the slightest inaccuracy could affect the value and even authenticity of a gemstone. Jewelers and gemologists use highly accurate scales to measure carat weight, ensuring that customers receive the precise carat weight they pay for, down to the hundredth of a carat.

Factors Influencing Apparent Size

Although carat weight is a significant contributor to the size of a gemstone, it's not the sole determinant of perceived stone size. The cut of a stone, particularly for diamonds, can visibly alter the stone's size. For example, a diamond with a wider table (the flat top surface) might appear larger than one with a smaller table, even if their carat weights are the same. The shape of a gemstone also comes into play; some shapes, like ovals and marquises, have larger surface areas compared to rounds or emeralds of the same carat weight.

The Marriage of Carat Weight and Gemstone Pricing

Pricing a gemstone is an intricate dance between art, science, and market economics. Carat Weight is one of the leading choreographers in this performance, setting the stage for the other actors like color, clarity, and cut to perform their roles in harmony.

The Carat's Role in Price Determination

High-carat weight gemstones, all things being equal, will command higher prices due to their rarity. This is an ‘all things being equal' scenario, however, the stone’s stone's color, clarity, and cut can also drastically influence the final price. In reality, the price per carat of a gemstone is not a linear scale; as carat weight increases, the price doesn't increase at the same rate, and for certain thresholds, the price might skyrocket thanks to a magical carat value, such as reaching 1 carat or 2 carats.

Factors Influencing Price Per Carat

Just as a diamond's carat weight is important, so too is its color and clarity. The most valuable diamonds are those that are completely colorless and have no inclusions or blemishes when viewed under 10x magnification. These characteristics, known as the four Cs (cut, color, clarity, and carat), interact in complex ways to determine a stone's price.

Larger stones with the highest grades for color and clarity can reach stratospheric prices, making them significant investments and coveted pieces. However, smaller stones that possess rare coloring or exceptional clarity can also be highly prized and valuable.

Examples of Carat Weight Impact on Gemstone Jewelry Cost

To emphasize the relationship between carat weight and gemstone cost, consider an example of how a diamond engagement ring's price might be affected by carat weight. A one-carat diamond of good quality can cost significantly more than a smaller diamond of the same quality.

Scaling up to a two-carat diamond, the price might quadruple due to the rarity of larger, high-quality diamonds. This stark increase in price makes carat weight a notable factor in the affordability and market value of gemstone jewelry. Whether it be yellow or white gold jewelry, diamond jewelry, or something with precious stones, understanding how the "carat" system is important.

In the world of gemstone jewelry, a carat is more than a unit of weight – it's a measure of history, a key to value, and a parameter for aesthetic consideration. By unraveling the mysteries of carat, shoppers can enrich their experience, making purchases that reflect their discernment and understanding. The investment in this knowledge translates to a lifetime of appreciation for the brilliance and beauty that gemstones offer.

So, if you want to know what your birthstone is and learn a little bit about its significance, stay tuned. In this guide, we'll explore all of the different birthstones in detail:

Birthstone Definition

Similar to zodiac signs, birthstones are gems that correspond with each month of the year. Each birthstone holds a symbolic meaning, such as luck, protection, healing powers, and more. They’re cherished cultural icons throughout the world, dating back to ancient texts, mythologies, and traditions.

More specifically, modern birthstones mostly derive from the breastplate of Aaron in Hebrew tradition and the twelve gems representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The birthstones used in jewelry today are curated by organizations like the American Gem Society and the National Association of Jewelers, offering a contemporary interpretation of this ancient tradition.

Symbolizes: Friendship, devotion, vitality, and balance

Used by the ancient Egyptians as protective talismans, garnets come in many different colors. From fiery oranges to rich burgundies, this gemstone looks stunning when paired with white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold. Try pairing garnets of multiple shades together on a necklace or set of earrings to create unique cluster jewelry.

At Edwin Novel, we believe that everyone should be able to propose with a real diamond. That belief guides us every day and has turned us into many people's favorite online diamond shop. Wondering how we're able to offer such exceptional value? Here, we'll talk about how we do it—and how we're different than the other guys.

How Most Jewelry Stores Operate

Whether they're a brick and mortar store or an online shop, most fine jewelry stores operate similarly. Here is how many jewelry stores handle two main aspects of design and manufacturing:

Sourcing Materials

A lot of jewelry stores source their metals and stones—including diamonds—from suppliers who received them from manufacturing plants and mines. The supplier purchases the materials at one price, then resells to jewelers for a profit. This results in the end customer paying more to ensure that everyone along the way gets paid their fair share.

Jewelry Design

Once the jeweler has the materials, they may work with outside designers and manufacturers to bring your jewelry to life. Again, this results in higher prices for customers because the jeweler must pay their designers and manufacturers.

How Edwin Novel Jewelry Design Operates

Unlike other jewelers, Edwin Novel doesn't rely on a middleman at any point in the process. Here's how we're different:

How Edwin Novel Sources Materials

We source our materials straight from conflict-free mines and sight holders. By purchasing our diamonds from mines, we cut out the middle man. This allows us to provide natural diamonds to you—our customer—at a lower price than the competitors. In addition to keeping prices low, sourcing our stones from directly from the mines means our stones are traceable and we are certain of the provenance—or the origin of—of the stone. When stones are sourced from suppliers, the traceability and provenance can get murky. Being able to trace a stone is important when it comes to ethical and sustainable jewelry making.

How Edwin Novel Designs Jewelry

We're proud to do all of our designing and manufacturing in-house, under the supervision of Edwin Novel himself. As a full manufacturing company, every piece of our fine jewelry is designed and meticulously crafted in our Los Angeles headquarters, allowing us to fully control and streamline the entire process. By removing another line of middlemen, we're able to further reduce prices while providing high quality jewelry.

Edwin Novel Jewelry Design vs The Other Guys

In summary, here's how we're able to provide affordable diamond jewelry to our customers:

We purchase diamonds directly from conflict-free mines, where other jewelry retailers procure their stones from suppliers.

We employ a team of jewelry designers, diamond setters, goldsmiths, metal-smiths, jewelry craftsmen, casting professionals, gemologists and diamond experts in our Los Angeles office. The other guys outsource design and manufacturing, driving up the price of their jewelry.

Choose Edwin Novel Jewelry Design for Your Next Piece

Whether you're in the market for an engagement ring, a wedding band, or diamond earrings, make Edwin Novel your first choice.
Understanding Ring Sizes

Knowing the numbers used to measure ring size is essential, and should be the first thing you familiarize yourself with before you look into measurement techniques. Ring sizes typically range from 3 to 13 for adults, with the average ring size falling between 5 and 7.5 for women and 8 and 10.5 for men. However, these sizes can vary depending on the region and the individual.

What Affects Your Ring Size?

When you go to measure your ring size, there are a few factors that may impact the size and cause size fluctuations. These include:

Temperature and Climate: Your body’s natural defense against the cold causes your fingers to swell in warmer weather and shrink in colder weather.

Time of Day: As you go about your day-to-day tasks and expose yourself to different climates, your fingers may react by swelling up throughout the day.

Recent Exercise: During and directly after you exercise, your body temperature will increase. This, in turn, causes your fingers to swell and become slightly larger than normal.

Pregnancy and Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations, and medical conditions can cause temporary or permanent changes in finger size. Women may experience swelling or enlargement of the fingers due to these changes.

Dominant Hand: The dominant hand often has slightly larger fingers than the non-dominant hand, so it’s important to know which hand you plan to put your ring on.

Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, including arthritis or edema, can cause swelling or inflammation in the fingers.

Measurement Tips

Measure your ring size multiple times per day. We recommend at least 3 to 4 times.

Take measurements later in the evening to account for swelling

Measure both your finger’s width and circumference

Confirm your measurements with multiple methods

If your knuckle is bigger than the base of your finger, measure both areas and average the size between the two

Favor measurements on your dominant hand for a more comfortable fit

If you’re still unsure, opt for a size that’s slightly larger than your measurements

Ring Sizing Methods

There are several effective methods you can use to measure your fingers for engagement rings and other types of rings. From using a tape measure to finding a printable ring sizer, here are your options:

Printable Ring Sizer

Ring sizing tools are easy to find online, allowing you to print the template you need in the convenience of your own home. Simply follow these steps for precise measurement:

Print a ring sizing chart: Find a professional jeweler website that offers a printable ring sizing chart. You can ensure the chart is printed to scale by double-checking the provided instructions or using a ruler to confirm the dimensions.

Follow the instructions carefully: Pay close attention to any guidelines provided with the printable ring sizer. Adhering to the printing instructions is crucial for getting an accurate measurement. You should also check to make sure nothing was skewed or warped during the printing process.

Place an existing ring on the chart: Aside from your finger, you can also use the ring sizer to measure an existing ring. Find a well-fitting ring in your home and place it over the printed chart, aligning the inner edge of the ring with the circles or lines. Match the inside edge of the ring with the corresponding circle or line to determine the size.

Strip of Paper or String

For this method, you only need a piece of string, a marker, and a ruler. Once you have the required materials, simply:

Wrap around your finger: Wrap string or a strip of paper around the base of the intended finger, ensuring it’s not too loose or too tight. The ideal tightness will still allow for comfortable movement and circulation.

Mark where the string overlaps: Use a pen or marker to note the point where the strip overlaps itself.

Measure the length in millimeters: Carefully remove the strip from your finger and use a ruler or measuring tape to determine the distance between the two marked points. Record the measurement in millimeters for accuracy.

Use a ring size chart: Refer to a ring size chart to find the matching size based on the measured length.

Flexible Measuring Tape

Whether you’re measuring your ring finger or any other digit, flexible measuring tapes offer a highly convenient and precise solution. Follow these steps for an accurate measurement:

Wrap around your finger: Wrap the measuring tape around the base of your finger, ensuring that it’s snug but not tight.

Note the measurement in millimeters: Carefully read the measurement on the tape where it meets the starting point. Record the measurement for reference.

Refer to a ring size chart: Refer to a ring size chart to find the matching size based on the measured length.

Existing Ring

As mentioned previously, you can easily use a ring you already own to find the correct ring size for new jewelry. We recommend:

Choose a well-fitting ring: First, find the ring you own that you find most comfortable on the finger you’ll be measuring.

Place the ring on a ring sizing chart: Choose a ring sizing chart provided by a reputable jeweler and place the inner edge of the ring over the circles or lines on the chart.

Match the ring to the circle: Align the ring so the inside edge matches with the circle or line on the chart. Be sure to accurately identify ring size indicators on the chart.

Whether you’re the proud owner of sterling silver jewelry, or are thinking about purchasing some soon, you might have questions about its longevity. The truth is that sterling silver pieces can tarnish, developing a dull appearance over time.

Why is this?

Luckily, our experts at Edwin Novel can tell you everything you need to know about sterling silver tarnish. We’ll explain why the tarnish occurs, as well as what you can do to care for your sterling silver jewelry and prevent tarnish.

What is Sterling Silver?

Sterling silver is not pure silver, being composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, typically copper. This is because pure silver is fragile and difficult to mold into jewelry. With the addition of copper, the silver becomes far more durable and easy to mold.

The downside of this process is the potential for tarnishing. While pure silver doesn’t tarnish, the copper inside the metal alloy can result in a dulled appearance over time.

Understanding Tarnish

Due to the copper present in sterling silver, the metal alloy is susceptible to tarnish over time. This tarnish is a type of oxidation that occurs when the silver jewelry comes into contact with sulfur-containing gases. These gases can be present in the air or produced by certain substances, resulting in a silver sulfide compound. The compound coats the metal’s surface with a thin, dark film.

Interactions with other substances can tarnish sterling silver as well, including oils, rubber bands, exhaust, leather, cellophane, cosmetics, and even water. They can all accelerate the process of discoloration when regularly coming into contact with your jewelry.

Here is a comprehensive list of why your sterling silver jewelry might tarnish:

Exposure to Air: Sterling silver jewelry left exposed to air is more prone to tarnishing due to the presence of sulfur and other chemicals in the atmosphere.

Chemical Exposure: Harsh chemicals found in everyday products such as skin care products, perfumes, and cleaning agents contribute to tarnish formation.

Storage Conditions: Improper storage, such as leaving sterling silver in humid conditions or direct sunlight, can accelerate tarnishing.

What Does Tarnished Sterling Silver Look Like?

The first sign of sterling silver tarnish is a slight discoloration or a dull, matte appearance. More extensive tarnishing may appear black, yellow-brown, brown-red, or even blue. The color change is the result of a layer of film atop the silver. The layer will start thin, progressing to a yellow-brown color and eventually turning blue. At maximum thickness, badly tarnished jewelry will appear black.

How To Prevent and Remove Sterling Silver Tarnish

While sterling silver can tarnish, there are several steps you can take to prevent it. If you don't want your sterling silver to tarnish, keeping it looking as good as the day you bought it, here are our recommendations:

Proper Sterling Silver Storage

The elements can cause damage to sterling silver jewelry over time. This includes exposure to humidity, sunlight, and excessive heat. To safeguard your jewelry against these elements, always store it in a dry, airtight bag or jewelry box when not in use.

You can even add a few bits of chalk to your silver jewelry storage container. The chalk will absorb moisture, which helps prevent tarnishing. We also suggest storing all of your sterling silver pieces separately so they don’t scratch each other.

Avoid Contact With Moisture

While accidentally showering or jumping in the pool once or twice with your sterling silver jewelry isn’t the end of the world, you should still do what you can’t to keep it away from high-moisture environments. Avoiding moisture means:

Don’t leave your silver jewelry sitting in high-moisture environments like bathrooms.

Remember to remove jewelry when you bathe or swim.

Wipe your sterling silver jewelry dry with a soft cloth after exposure to moisture.

Use airtight bags or containers to store your silver jewelry when not in use.

Take extra precautions when traveling to humid destinations by storing your silver jewelry properly.

Clean Your Jewelry Regularly

It’s important to clean your sterling silver pieces regularly, whether that means wiping them down after you wear them or addressing the first signs of tarnish. Start by using a dry soft cloth to wipe your jewelry down. This simple process can remove slight tarnish.

For more heavy tarnishes, removal is possible with a basic cleaning process or a silver cleaning kit. Here is a step-by-step guide:

Combine water and a few drops of dishwashing soap in a cup.

Submerge your jewelry into the cup and lightly handwash. You can also use a cotton swab to reach tight corners and a toothbrush to scrub stubborn tarnish.

Remove your sterling silver jewelry from the cup and gently wipe it down.

Allow the piece to air dry before it’s placed back into storage.

Keep Harsh Chemicals Away

Products and substances high in sulfates should be kept away from sterling silver. Sterling silver tarnishes more easily when exposed to hairsprays, shampoos, lotions, and perfumes, whether the product is airborne or present on your skin.

If you’re going to use these products, we recommend ensuring that your jewelry is the last thing you put on and the first thing you remove when doing your daily routine. Also, do your best to avoid touching the silver with lotion on your hands or while you apply your makeup.

Try Silver Polish

Commercial silver polish can be bought online or at your local jewelry store. You can remove sterling silver tarnish with polish using these simple steps:

Read the manufacturer's instructions for proper usage and safety precautions before applying the polish.

Apply a small amount of silver polish to the tarnished area using a soft lint-free cloth or a polishing cloth.

Rub the polish into the area using gentle, circular motions. Take care not to apply too much pressure, as this can cause scratches or damage to the metal.

Rinse the jewelry thoroughly with warm water to remove any leftover polish residue. Use a dry, soft cloth to pat the jewelry dry, ensuring no water spots remain.

Using a clean portion of the cloth, buff the sterling silver jewelry to a high shine.

Store your sterling silver jewelry in a dry, airtight bag or jewelry box to prevent tarnish from reoccurring. Avoid storing silver jewelry with other metals to prevent scratching.

Wear Your Jewelry Often

Contrary to what you might think, tossing your sterling silver jewelry into the storage box for the rest of time isn’t the way to go. In actuality, that’s the last thing you should do.

The most effective way to enjoy your jewelry and prevent tarnishing is to wear it regularly, wipe it down when you’re finished, and deep clean it occasionally. That way, you can spot early signs of tarnish right away and keep your jewelry looking shiny and new over time.

Sterling Silver Tarnish FAQ

- How quickly does sterling silver jewelry tarnish?

Sterling silver jewelry tarnishes at different rates depending on what it’s exposed to. Jewelry that’s properly stored and kept away from harsh chemicals can go years without tarnishing, while jewelry exposed to those things will tarnish much faster.

As symbols of love and luxury, diamonds are known for their enduring beauty. But over the past several years, the landscape has evolved to include lab-grown diamonds.

Whether you're looking for the perfect engagement ring, diamond earrings, or a wedding ring, it's important to know if you're getting natural or lab-grown diamonds. Here, we'll discuss the key differences and why Edwin Novel Jewelry Design only uses 100% real diamonds in our fine jewelry.

Does Edwin Novel Use Real Diamonds?

Yes. We only use 100% natural diamonds, and we never use stones that have been laser or chemically enhanced. You'll notice that each of our pieces have the descriptor, "100% real natural diamond, not enhanced." Creating quality jewelry is our mission, and we accomplish that using real diamonds set in solid gold or platinum.

All of our stones and metals are ethically-sourced through the finest mines and sight holders in the world to ensure consistent quality. Each piece created by Edwin Novel Jewelry Design is handmade with pride in the U.S.A. by our award-winning team of internal artisans, with the approval of Edwin Novel himself.

With this in mind, let's take a step back and discuss the difference.

What is the Difference Between Real and Lab Grown Diamonds?

Natural diamonds are formed when carbon crystalizes deep within the Earth's mantle over millions to billions of years. High heat and intense pressure work together to create the unique structure that gives diamonds their exceptional hardness and brilliance.

Lab-grown diamonds, also known as synthetic diamonds or cultured diamonds, are created through a process that replicates the natural conditions that form the real thing. Scientists use a process called High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) to produce stones that are physically, chemically, and visually carbon copies of natural diamonds.

Many people believe that synthetic diamonds are the same as cubic zirconia or moissanite, but this isn't the case. While both natural and lab-grown diamonds are made of carbon, cubic zirconia is zirconium dioxide and moissanite is a mixture of carbon and silica.

Diamonds vs Cubic Zirconia

While cubic zirconia is colorless, it doesn't sparkle like a diamond. But the most notable difference is the durability. Diamonds are famously the hardest substance on earth. It's extremely durable and can stand up to everyday wear while maintaining its beauty. Cubic zirconia, on the other hand, is not nearly as resilient. It is easily scratched by everyday wear and will even soak up oils from your skin. after a few years, almost all cubic zirconia pieces look cloudy. Quality jewelry is our passion and because of this, Edwin Novel never uses cubic zirconia.

Diamonds vs Moissanite

Moissanite is a naturally-occurring mineral known as silicon carbide. It is rare, but typically found in pieces smaller than one carat. Because of this, moissanite used in fine jewelry design is lab-grown. Moissanite is almost as hard as diamonds, but the color often has a yellow or green tint. In addition, their brilliance is different than a diamond's, which is not appealing to some people. You will never find moissanite in Edwin Novel jewelry.

Why Edwin Novel Uses Real Diamonds

If lab-grown diamonds are so similar to natural ones, why does Edwin Novel exclusively use the real thing? There are two main reasons.

Value

While lab grown diamonds are more affordable up front, they do not hold their value the way natural diamonds do. Natural diamonds hold their value, even if it fluctuates from time to time. On the other hand, the value of lab-grown diamonds varies wildly and unpredictably. Many jewelers in the resale space refuse to purchase pieces made with lab-grown diamonds, and some even claim they have no value.

If you're purchasing a piece of diamond jewelry as an investment, you'll definitely want to opt for a natural stone. Similarly, a piece of real diamond jewelry is an ideal heirloom. Passing down grandma's lab-grown diamond engagement ring just isn't as special.

Scarcity

Because they are formed by a natural process, real diamonds are a finite resource. The scarcity makes diamond jewelry even more special and valuable. Lab-grown diamonds are mass-produced, with each diamond taking just one to two weeks for form. This expedited process allows labs to produce billions of carats in lab-grown stones per year, making them far less exclusive than the real thing.

Color

Most people are aware that diamonds are available in a variety of colors, including yellow, pink, and black. Lab-grown diamonds can also be colored, although they are available in fewer colors than natural stones. If you're looking for a custom piece with a colored diamond, you are more likely to get the piece you want with a real stone.

Sustainability

Edwin Novel Jewelry Design uses ethically-sourced diamonds from vetted mines. Growing diamonds in a lab requires a huge amount of high heat and pressure, which uses an incredible amount of energy. In fact, it is estimated that the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method uses the same amount of energy that the average house uses in one month.

Choose Edwin Novel Jewelry Design for Diamond Jewelry

Handcrafted by master jewelers in the United States, Edwin Novel has a reputation for creating the finest jewelry. Whether you're looking for a pendant, diamond earrings, or your new staple piece, make Edwin Novel your first choice.

When shopping online, it's important to understand the company's return policy. At Edwin Novel Jewelry Design, we want you to be 100% satisfied with your purchase. If, for any reason, you need to return or exchange your fine jewelry, we want to make this process as smooth as possible.

Edwin Novel Return Policy

If you are unsatisfied with your purchase for any reason, you may return it within 30 days for a full refund. The timeline begins when you receive your order. It's important to know that upgraded shipping and expediting fees are non-refundable.

Please note that due to the complexity and the individual requirements, custom orders are not refundable.

Edwin Novel Exchange Policy

If you'd like to exchange your piece, we're proud to offer a 100% exchange policy for the lifetime of your product. Unless otherwise specified before purchase, all items are exchangeable for 100% credit. You can use this credit to purchase a new design, larger stone, or several different pieces.

Why Would I Return Jewelry?

There are many reasons you may want or need to return your piece(s). Here are a few of the most common reasons for return or exchange:

The item was a gift, but was not to the giftee's taste - Perhaps the recipient likes complex designs, but was gifted a minimalist piece. No worries, we're happy to help exchange it for something they'll love.

There was an allergy to the metal - While we use fine metals like platinum, and yellow, rose, and white gold, allergies are not uncommon. If you are experiencing a reaction to the metal, please contact us to initiate a refund or exchange.

The jewelry was no longer needed - Whether the result of a canceled event, change in relationship status, or change in personal style, maybe your jewelry is no longer needed. We understand life is always full of surprises, and will work with you to refund your jewelry.

Sizing issues - Despite our best efforts, sizing issues can sometimes occur. Whether your jewelry is too tight or loose on arrival, we’ll work to accurately resize an exchange for you.

Damage or defects - Though incredibly rare, please contact us immediately if you notice any damage or defects on your jewelry. We’ll provide an undamaged exchange ASAP.

How to Return to Edwin Novel Jewelry Design

We strive to make returns as seamless as possible. Here is how to start the process:

Contact one of our customer representatives by calling (888) 765-4326 or emailing customercare@edwinnoveljewelrydesign.com. Phone calls are accepted Monday to Friday from 8 AM - 4 PM PST, and you can email at any time. We'll be in touch as soon as possible.

When you reach our customer service team, request a “RMA” (Return Merchandise Authorization) number. Be prepared to provide your customer service representative with your original order number, the description of the item(s) being returned, and whether you'd like to return or exchange the piece(s).

When you have your RMA number, securely package your item(s) to ship back to us. Items can be shipped via the carrier of your choice. Please see packaging & shipping guidelines below. If you live in southern California, returns or exchanges may be dropped off in person at our Los Angeles headquarters. If you drop off returns/repairs/exchanges in person, request a receipt at the time you drop off your item(s).

After shipping, please provide your customer service representative the tracking information via email or phone.

When we have received your package, it will be checked by our gemologists, reviewed and confirmed by our accounting department, and cross-referenced with its corresponding original order. Please allow up to two weeks for this process.

Be sure that your item is in its original condition with the original jewelry box with a copy of the appraisal for a full refund. Packages missing the original appraisal are subject to a $50 fee, while missing boxes and invoices will incur additional fees.

The piece(s) must be in their original state. If any stones are removed, or the piece has been altered, re-sized, or damaged, the return/exchange policy and warranty will be voided.

Packaging & Shipping Guidelines

Be sure to write the RMA number on the box. Packages without an RMA number will not be accepted.

We recommend addressing your package to “Edwin Novel” only. Including "jewelry" on the exterior of the package increases the risk of theft.

Be sure to include the original appraisal and jewelry box. Fees may apply if these items are not included within your return or exchange.

You may use any shipping carrier as long as the item is shipped with a return tracking number, a valid signature, and is insured for a value meeting or exceeding the value of purchase. Edwin Novel Jewelry Design is not responsible for loss or damage of items shipped to us for any reason. The customer is responsible for handling loss or damage claims with their carrier's insurance provider.

How and When Will I Get My Refund?

Once we have reviewed your package and deemed it is eligible for a refund—typically a two week process— you will receive credit through your original payment method. Credit card payments will be refunded back to the original card used to place the order, and PayPal payments will receive a refund through PayPal. Orders that were paid via wire transfer or check will be paid via an Edwin Novel Jewelry Design company check. As will refunds of the difference on items accepted for a trade-in.

At Edwin Novel Jewelry Design, You Can Buy With Confidence

With our return and exchange policy, we make it simple to ensure you always get the diamond jewelry you want. Whether you're shopping for diamond stud earrings, your beloved's perfect engagement ring, or a special piece for yourself, we pride ourselves on quality in our jewelry and our customer service.
